sneak peek: Kenzo

Hannah-Rose from Capture the Castle got a sneak preview at the fresh-off-a-plane Kenzo designed by  Humberto Leon and Carol Lim (Founders of Opening Ceremony) pieces, arriving in-store at The Corner Shop Strand Arcade next week. In her latest post for The Corner Shop, she shows you what you can expect from the coolest new label on the scene.

What could be better than the chic sophistication of Paris mixed with the downtown hip of New York? That's what happened when Opening Ceremony founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim - surely the two people with the most perfect taste in the whole world, no? - were named creative directors at storied French fashion house Kenzo. They've injected their signature brand of cool - pop colour, funky prints and a vibrant sensibility - and cracked open the windows for this aging brand. They've let in the light.

The first thing I saw when I clapped eyes on this sucker-punch of a collection was how young it looks. This is a brand that slots right in between Carven and 3.1 Phillip Lim. These are clothes to have fun in. You know, fun. Late night dancing and early morning walks home, dinners that turn into breakfasts, mid-week sunbathing sessions and drinks before lunch. That sunshine-bright top with a ruffled peplum is just begging to be twirled. That tent-like reversible dress couldn't be better for a sunshine-y afternoon. And don't even get me started on those palazzo pants, which are the kind of amazing that only happens in New York. And Paris.

These are my favourite looks from this fantastic new brand - arriving in store at The Corner Shop next week and destined to become the wardrobe staples of every cool girl. It really doesn't get any better than this. Thanks to Sahra for being a delightful - and totally photogenic model!

sunday at frock

Hannah-Rose from Capture the Castle spent last Sunday at The Frock Exchange - the consignment store little sister of Belinda and the Corner Shop. For her latest post for The Corner Shop Hannah-Rose styles up some of her favourite pieces and sees what's in store at the Frock Exchange.

There's something about the thrill of a bargain that always makes the sun shine brighter - especially when it's been raining all weekend. I arrived at The Frock Exchange - nestled on Clovelly Road amongst German bakeries and cute cafes - when it was pouring with rain and after a couple of hours of playing dress ups and seeing what was in store (Isabel and APC and Alexander Wang oh my!) the sun came out yellow and true. Which was just as well because it was high time that I sat down somewhere nice, like Green Mango, for a bagel and a coffee. Clovelly is great like that - full of surprises and totally lovely.

The consignment store of choice, The Frock Exchange always unearths some amazing gems, whether they be excess stock from Belinda or The Corner Shop, or the pre-loved treasures from Sydney's most fashionable wardrobes. It's one of those best-kept secret locations, where you can take your time browsing and searching for something truly special. I found some amazing pieces when I was there for great prices - and they have a sale rack and box at the moment, with some things for $50 and under! And you can reward yourself with your savings by getting a pretzel or donut ball from Backerei on the way home. Sound like a good Sunday or what?

hunting

The weather's turning very sad and grey and the only acceptable response for Hannah-Rose from Capture the Castle is shearling! In her latest post for The Corner Shop she checks out the new Carly Hunter pieces in store at The Corner Shop Paddington and Strand Arcade and has a little chat with the designer about the best remedy for autumn/winter blues...

Carly Hunter Corporeal Vest, $375, Carly Hunter Corporeal Coat, $675

I have been a big fan of Carly Hunter since I stumbled across her wonderful faux-fur shearling vest in The Corner Shop around this time last year. As usual and right on clockwork the skies had seemed to open up, dumping deluge after deluge of rain upon Sydney without end. It was chilly and grey and the best - the only! - solution seemed to be to embrace this Teddy Bear-like oversized vest with a huge collar and wear it non-stop. Which I did. All though Autumn, all through Winter, somewhat through Summer and then almost every day in New York. It's super warm and cosy and it makes you feel like you can brave the wet, which is a hard thing when your bed is warm and you don't want to get up.

This season Carly Hunter has updated the natural-toned vest from last season with a black version and a coat to boot - wool sleeves and a fuzzy fur body which is absolute perfection. I love both for their "wrap me up" sensibility and couldn't think of a better first-week-of-autumn will-it-ever-stop-raining buy. Layered under coats or over sweaters the vest definitely holds it own, and what more can be said about the coat? Winter warmth distilled into one garment. I had a quick chat with Carly Hunter about her latest collection, her love of faux-shearling and her autumn survival tips. Check it out below:

one. what was the inspiration behind your recent A/W collection?

'Corporeal' is the word that describes the body as material object as opposed to the spirit, and is taken from a Broadcast song as a small tribute to their sci-fi, retro futurist music and vibe. Everything is a bit more structured and sits closer to the body this season, yet is still very long and draping. The designs are inspired by futurism and eveningwear, which is a recurring theme throughout all collections. The black and white designs in the woven fabrics are reflections of white noise, optical illusions, visual data and magic eye images.

two. if autumn/winter was a fabric, what would it be?

hmm...the black (faux) fur I used in the coats and gilets. Its so soft and warm.

three. how would you describe your aesthetic?

Im really inspired by 90’s casual wear, minimalism and eveningwear, and like to merge these elements in every collection. I like to create something really comfortable and lax and turn it into something very delicate an feminine.

four. who is the Carly Hunter girl?

hmm Im still not sure. I know a lot of different people buy my label, but the friends who do really like to be very comfortable but still know that they are wearing designs of high quality that fit well, yet are slightly obscure.

five. what is your idea of a perfect autumn day?

I know its ridiculous but I really love the autumn leaves, and its my favourite season because the weather is perfect, neither too hot or cold or windy. But I would probably be inside watching movies/reading Game of Thrones and drinking coffee!

that uni lifestyle

Hannah-Rose from Capture the Castle is going back to school this week - and she's dreaming of a wardrobe full of Forte Forte shirts (new in store at The Corner Shop Strand Arcade and Belinda Double Bay now) as well as days free to spend drinking coffee at cafes. Read her latest post below:

Uni starts again this week – and so life goes back to that crazy, stress-inducing mélange of lectures, tutes and assessments mixed in with a healthy dash of study on the side. Sitting in the library. Running around campus. All-nighters. But you have to take the bad with the good, right? Co-existing harmoniously with the rigors of tertiary study is that glorious thing called the university lifestyle. Think: starting the day at 11 in the morning, sitting in cafes reading books all afternoon and swanning around campus in comfy, “getting things done” clothing.

Forte Forte is one of those great labels that manages to combine with relative, seamless ease being casual and simple as well as fashion forward. Their new collection, in store at The Corner Shop Strand Arcade and Belinda Double Bay now is a dream – all pastel colours with a few brights (forest green and a rusty orange) thrown in for good measure – of perfect shirts, drawstring pants and satin-collared blazers. These are the types of clothes that would make any day at uni a breeze, sitting through an hour of English lectures would be nothing if you were wearing a little flippy canvas skirt, who wouldn’t want to go to the library in a cotton shirt the colour of fairy-floss with the sleeves rolled up and the ends flying loose?

One of my favourite places in the world is Alimentari, a Paddington deli and café at the bottom of William St in Paddington – beloved of the girls at The Corner Shop and Belinda a mere hop, skip and jump away – and a great place to bunker down and do some work during semester. There’s a little section out the back where no-one will disturb you, and you can take your coffee and pastry (ricotta filled cannoli is my weapon of choice!) and sit there, doing your readings or working your way through Kim Scott’s Dead Man Dance as I am currently doing. What’s so bad about university, after all?
