washed out

Hannah-Rose from Capture the Castle is dreaming of a wardrobe made out of clothes in gelato colours and shades. Get in a pastel kind of mood with her latest post for The Corner Shop.

There was this old-school ice cream parlour in the heart of one of those double bay malls that I used to go to with friends on a friday after school when it was really, really, really hot. The flavours were run of the mill but the colours were something not out of this world. Mint choc chip the most glorious shade of pale green flecked with rich brown, lemon sorbet like rays of sunshine, bubblegum blitz a sickly kind of bright blue that no food should be (but we ate it anyway, of course).

Somehow Autumn dressing always makes me think of pastel colours. You want to wash out your wardrobe when the rain comes, but you don't want it to be saccharine sweet. Rather, it's all about playing with proportion and texture and sneaky little details - like the sheer-back on that Dorota shirt! - to counteract cute-as-a-button ice cream shades of clothing. Pastel shades are not just for spring and summer. In fact, I think it's kind of obvious to wear them in the warmer months. Autumn's grey skies and early morning chill is the best - the only - time to wear pistachio green denim. You heard it here first.
